We are so excited that the Good Old Days in Pacific Grove is just around the corner. In the past we have been able to help out in different ways which has been great. We will be helping out again this year. But in addition we will have a booth selling Twinkies and Cheesecake. That's right sugar rush! The proceeds from this booth will go to support The Bridge. Yes, indeed it has been a while since we have posted anything. Time goes so fast..... The holidays were good, and we have settled into the New Year nicely here at The Bridge. We have been preparing for the upcoming year and schedules and so on. It has caused us to look back a bit and remember how much has happened in the last several years. When we started in the first house we weren't even sure how long "The Bridge" would last. It has been apparent that God's hand has been upon us the entire time. As we transitioned to a larger house to hold more men we've seen many people come through. The hearts of all involved in The Bridge are for everyone to make a radical change. One persons addiction affects many people, family, friends, coworkers, financial institutions and on and on. Thank you to all who have a part in helping to make The Bridge possible, to the Board of Directors, our many volunteers, our monthly donors and most of all to God. It's amazing be able to watch the transition in a persons life who really wants to change. Thank you everyone for making it possible to have a place where men can come and know God and make changes that last.

Bridge Update

We are in full swing right now in preparing the our yearly fundraising event. But, we did get a little break last week and had some time away to watch a baseball game. It was a great getaway. In spite of the Padres banner we were at a Giants game. However, one guy brought his brother and cousin. They got to experience first had what it feels like to go against the flow. They weren't popular in the stands. But, they maintained their love of the Padres in spite of being among Giants fans. If only that same perseverance would get carried into everyday life. In your ever day life do you stand for Jesus and what's right, or do you compromise when it's tough?

Tragic Fire

Last night there was a tragic fire down the street from The Bridge. Several residents, Mike and Michele, along with many neighbors watched as the apartment building burned. The Fire Crews on seen did an amazing job. I don't know all the details of the fire, but what we do know is it was horrible to watch everything burning so quickly. It was also a very clear reminder of how we really don't know what tomorrow will bring. I don't know how many people were directly affected by this fire, but in an instant all of their lives were changed. Their stuff was gone.... This fire was such reminder of the message Mike taught at the Monday night Most Excellent Way weekly meeting. At the meeting he reminded us that our value should be not be in the things we posses rather in our relationships. First our relationship with Jesus, then our relationships with our families, and others. No matter what a great job these firefighters did fighting this fire, the stuff inside was consumed so quickly. Where are your priorites? Are you focusing on only your stuff? Or are you spending time on building the right relationships?

The Bridge gets to participate every now and then in trash pick up with other members of Pacific Grove. After trash pick up we then get to eat at Bechlers which has outstanding food. http://patisseriebechler.com/ But, when you are driving down the street and you toss out whatever you have, remember someone at some point will have to clean it up. Our lives can be like that sometimes, full of trash that impacts others. Let's try and keep our trash both on the road, and in our lives cleaned up. If not ask for help to get it taken care of!

Life Church at Calvary Monterey last night was great! Dinner made and served by The Bridge, all proceeds go to The Bridge. Adults $5 and kids ages 3-9 $3 (3 and under free). Dinner from 5:00 - 6:15 and it will continue for the summer. Service at 6:30 and the worship and teaching were just great. See http://www.calvary.com/ for more information and teaching schedule. Recently the Good Old Days was happening here in Pacific Grove. It is a fun event. The guys get to help out doing various things, parking patrol, trash pick up, set up, etc....... The the best job of all this year was done by a smiling and cheerful Mike D and Robert. These two were THE BEST and did the "Poop pick-up" detail. What troopers they were. Best of all is the applause they were getting during the parade. It was great, the horse would do it's business and they would kindly scoop the the lovely droppings and then people were applauding. Some of those were hard to scoop circular little droppings that took some effort in gracefully scooping. But, they had the knack and did a great job!!!! Let's hear it for Mike & Robert the the amazing scoopers!!!! Stay tuned for more pictures. Several men have been recently off site working at an event out of town. So the house was much quieter or a bit. But, they are back now and they tell me there are pictures to post so stay tuned.

Yes, it has been a while since the last post. Let's start by getting current on who has the trophy for outstanding effort in something or another. The last post was Robbie, who was sad handing off to Mike H. Mike who has done a great job cooking, handed off to Britt. Britt has been an overall blessing to The Bridge. He is quick to pitch in and lend a hand or help with whatever needs to be done. Britt is also our on site helper who is greatly appreciated!!!! Then Britt handed off to Leonard. Britt made the selection this week as he was overseeing some of the guys while they were off site working. Britt wanted to recognize the great job done by Leonard. Way to go all of you!!!!!! You are wonderful, all of you!!!!!

OK, so it might be hard to follow, but Louie has 4 parts to his binder, the 1st about his daughter, then about running, then about helping out his friend Raymond who needed a trim, so Louie decided to included the the 3D affect and include the hair, did all that really come out of Raymond's ears?????????? OK, so the ear hair wins over the ketchup man.

OK, so this was a funny hard to choose competition. Mike challenges the guys to do some lighthearted binder competitions now and then............ This week was a hard pick between Louie and Micah. Louie was the winner, but Micah (who won last time) was a close contender. Micah didn't win, but you gotta love the thought............ Yes, I realize it's sideways, I should have rotated the picture. But, check out the ketchup bottle binder, on a skateboard with a head and all.............. But, the winner was Louie, this was some real creative thinking...........

Three Tuesday evenings a month we have a house meeting at The Bridge. The meeting is a place where people can talk about problems/concerns at the house. Two weeks ago we started handing out a trophy. This trophy will begin to be passed back and forth weekly depending on who has earned it for the week. Last week (week one) Dennis earned the trophy for hugely improved behavior, he went from zero t0 hero last week. This week the trophy is the mighty man of valor trophy and it was won by Robert Luther. Way to go Dennis and Robert............. Wonder who will get it next week...........? Holidays mean many things to families, some are filled with good memories and some bad. What a blessing to watch God create some new memories in the lives of the men here. Third Annual Fundraiser and Dinner

The Third Annual Fundraiser and Dinner for the Bridge, held at the wonderfully revamped Calvary Chapel of the Monterey Bay, was a complete and overwhelming success! Approximately 300 guests filed into the Main Sanctuary, which was remodeled to serve as a fantastic dining room. There was such an abundance of help from so many volunteers that it appeared to be a flawless evening. And, to top off the whole event, it was just revealed that after expenses the Bridge netted $30,000 from all the events taking place!!

Wow, what an incredible night!

Ok so you might ask what is up with the toothbrush? That's what I was wondering as well. Speaking as the "lady" of the house I never know what unexpected things I will experience.
This was a recent unexpected funny discovery............ This picture is our kitchen window.......... Yes, this is a toothbush hanging from the window on the outside. Doesn't everyone have a toothbrush hanging in their kitchen windows from a fish hook? Oh wait, maybe that's only at The Bridge. The Bridge comes with many challenges, as well as many funny blessings. The toothbrush hanging in the window is one of those funny blessings.

Out for a walk......

The last two Tuesday nights we've had a fun time walking down to Baskin Robbins and getting ice-cream on dollar scoop night. I'm sure it's a funny site to see a big group of people walking down Lighthouse. People probably wonder, who are those people and where are they all going.?.?.?.?.

We are happy to report that we had a guy return last night who has been away taking care of some business. He's been gone for almost a year and we are blessed to have him return. What a blessing that there is a place for him to return to to get his life on track. In addition to his return we've had two new residents in the past two weeks making a total of three new residents. We are grateful for all the prayers and support it takes to make The Bridge a reality. These men are grateful to be here. Thank you to everyone who supports The Bridge in some way. You are helping to provide a setting where mens lives can change. Praise the Lord!

Friday, Mike, Mike, Dave and Paul went up to The Well for a visit. One decided to have an extended stay.... The Well is a fantastic program that The Bridge is modeled after. The Well has several 'Business Ministries' outside of their recovery home. They have a new Lightening Lube oil change station where Mike P got his oil changed. They also have an auto repair shop, auto detailing, auto dealership, restaurant and print shop. There are a lot of things that we are still learning, but the encouraging thing is that both facilities offer help to hurting men trying to rebuild their lives.

The Chamber of Commerce of the City of Pacific Grove held their Mixer at the Bridge this evening, and the turnout was quite impressive. We hosted a fine group of local dignitaries, and various members from our Board of Directors, and , of course, the guys from the Bridge. A good time was had by all!

San Francisco Marathon

On Sunday Mike & Louie ran another marathon--- yes that's right another marathon. That makes their third one this year......can you believe it. Way to go guys! Michele got in on the action and ran the 1/2 marathon plus some additional miles when she got back in the race and continued on with Mike. It was so great to have a cheering team there to be encouraged.

We saw on the shirts of several people who were running and boy is that the truth.

Louie recently graduated and is living off site at Sober Living, but continues to be plugged in and to be an encouragement to the other men at The Bridge. When Louie came in last July he had 2 boxes, a bottle of bleach, and a willing heart that's it........ If you have a willing heart all things really are possible, and Louie has been able to see that. His two bags and bottle of bleach have grown. He left with a truck load of stuff, a job, two marathons under his belt (and now a 3rd). But, more then that he left with a renewed strength and relationship with Jesus. Thank you God

for your mercy in our lives.

Bridge opens Sober Living

A few weeks ago two guys moved out into the new 2nd phase house, otherwise know as "Sober Living"

We are very excited about this next step of housing being made available for people who graduate from The Bridge. Right now there are two men living here, Jeff who is pictured and Louie who is not pictured. There is enough room for 3 maybe 4 men. Jeff completed The Bridge many months ago and has been patiently waiting for this next phase of housing. Louie just completed his year and was very glad this was an option for the next phase in his life. We are so proud of both of them and excited to watch the next phase of their lives develop. We would appreciate your prayers for continued provision for this place. With only two men there right now it's making finances very tight and The Bridge absorbs that additional load. Please pray for that additional provision while we are waiting for the right person to fill the next spot. God is good!

Calvary House ministry of Calvary Chapel Fortlauderdale

Mike returned from Florida Friday evening. He was happy and tired! This is a picture of Calvary House. They have about 50 men, a bit more then us!!!! Mike was so blessed to spend time on site there. He enjoyed his roommates, said they were very gracious to him. He was so grateful for all those in leadership who took so much time with him to answer questions and just let him observe how they do things! What a blessing!!!! This trip was great. Thank you Calvary House and Calvary Chapel Fortlauderdale for allowing us to be there and being so gracious to us Californians.

Mike & Michele are in Fortlauderdale vi sting Calvary Chapel and visiting another ministry identical to The Bridge. The men's home there is called Calvary House. What a great place!!! Pastor Geoff and his wife Denise came from this church and are there visiting now and helped make this connection possible. This has been a huge resource to Mike & Michele. What a blessing to be able to go and ask questions, and to be encouraged by other like minded ministries. Calvary House has been in existence for approximately 20 years and have faced many of the same things as The Bridge, both good and challenging issues. Mike and Michele have been greatly encouraged. Michele returns today, and Mike later in the week. Your prayers for continued traveling mercy are appreciated. There have been some bumps in the road with travel. But, overall the trip has been wonderful. Thank you for all who have prayed.

Helping to Beautify Pacific Grove

We truly enjoy the projects that we can be involved with that help our community in a highly visible sense, and a few days ago we had such an opportunity. The flower beds on Pacific Grove's main avenue needed some new color, and with the assistance of local businesses that supplied the flowers, the guys went to work and got their hands dirty! The results are breathtaking, and something that the whole town can enjoy. We're so glad to help!!

Helping Out in Pacific Grove

Today we were able to offer our services to Pacific Grove, and help with another Highway 68 cleanup. It's volunteer work like this, and the helpful spirit of the Bridge guys, that assisted us in getting a Commendation by the City of Pacific Grove, by the State Senate and State Congress as Volunteers of the Year. We are very grateful for opportunities like these to be a part of such a fine community!

Michele's Birthday

It's been a few weeks, but Michele recently had a birthday and there were a few tricks up Mike's sleeve...in the process of getting to her new laptop, she had to start out with the process of un-wrapping several boxes (each wrapped with paper) until she got down to a 'ring sized' box. She asked Mike 'Is this what I think it is?' at which point, she opened the box and found instructions to look on one of the dogs collars. It was a note that directed her to the shed, where the 'real gift' was. She brought it in and at last, un-wrapped her new laptop! Sorry for the late post, but it seems that everyone gets really busy now and again. Happy Birthday, Michele!

The Bridge participated in a relay team in the Big Sur Marathon on Sunday. There were five participants Adam, Tom (Adam's Dad), Tony, Louie, and Mike. Way to go Team Bridge!!!!! They all did a great job! A special thank you to Tom, Adam's dad for sponsoring team Bridge and participating with them.

Some months back we were absolutely privileged to have Thomas Kinkade here painting The Bridge. What an absolute blessing and treat that was for those of us that were here to meet him and watch him paint. You can go to our older blog posts and see the pictures........ He painted the outside of the house and titled it "The House of Hope" as was titled in a newspaper article back in November 08. For the past couple of weeks, the Parkers have been able to show movies in their driveway and invite the neighbors, family and friends for some fun. Last night, they showed 'Turner and Hooch' and it was a Hoot! Louie and Adam came over, and I think that Sal and Joey made an appearance. Getting to know the guys at The Bridge, and getting to know their personalities has been such a great blessing. What a great group of guys. If you get a chance, ask Joey if he's seen 'Jaws' or not.....

We are hoping to expand. Read on to find out how you can help. We have applied for our use permit to expand from 6 residents to 12 residents. We are very excited about stepping through this process. However, all the support we can get is welcomed and appreciated. We have been given a list of fire regulations that we need to meet. We are in the process of doing that now. In addition to that we have a public hearing scheduled on Thursday, April 2nd at 300 Forest Ave in Pacific Grove at 6:00. We would love to have your prayers of support, letters of support, or if you would like have you there in person as public support. Please call the office at 372-2033 for more information or with questions. As you can see from the pictures we have to post a sign in our yard letting people know our intentions. In addition we also had to mail out 159 letters notifying our surrounding neighbors of our intention. Our hearts desire is to be able to expand, and to continue being good neighbors. When men first come in to The Bridge they do not work outside jobs. The first 5-6 months are spent getting stable. That time is for them to learn new patterns, so when they do begin working again they will be more productive and reliable. Although they are not personally earning money in Phase I, they learn to get up everyday have morning devotions, leave the house and go work and then come home --- while sober. So when they do go back out and work they will have a new productive pattern of living. One of our guys, Louie just went through that process and now he is experiencing the fruit of a well earned paycheck. He is very glad to be able to finally start paying his own way and taking responsibility. Responsibility comes not only with sobriety but paying your obligations. Louie is on his way to doing that. We are so proud of him!!! Way to go Louie!!!

This post is meant to be an encouragement to the guys to wait for that special gal to come along (after their graduation, of coarse), and not get all fired up about the wrong one! Pre-Rib Throw-Down

Thursday night left us with the aroma of smoked ribs as we walked away from an extravaganza of food, fellowship and fun. Mike made a second attempt at cooking ribs that would out-shine those of another 'un-mentionable' group of culinary critiques. His attempts, although valiant, will be met no doubt with fierce competition. All those who attended last Thursday were required to sign binding documentation to the fact that they were not to disclose the secret ingredients of the sauce, nor the special pre-message techniques that Mike incorporates in his rib cooking process. Afterwards, we all sat around in the living room while Michele separated items brought back from the Yellow Brick Road. What a grand time we had, and look forward to being on Mike's sideline as the day of the Rib Throw-Down comes closer. Thanks for the night, Mike and Michele! Thanks to all those that work at getting things done at The Bridge. It's definitely a team effort!

This past Saturday The Bridge guys had an opportunity to participate in a "Fun Run". Dorothys Kitchen a ministry based out of Salinas http://www.dorothysplace.org/ was hosting the run. It was a fundraiser for them. It was a 6 mile run (or walk). So it was a great time for The Bridge guys to exercise, participate in a group activity, and support a local ministry. All of the guys from The Bridge who entered finished!!! It was a 6 mile first for some guys. A win win all around! Good job guys!

Pastor Andy Hessert, You are Goin' Down!!

With all due respect Andy, Pastor Mike is taking this Rib Contest very seriously. What rib contest you might say? On March 21st, at Calvary Chapel Monterey Bay, Mike and Andy will be facing off to see who can cook up the tastiest ribs you can imagine, as part of a fun filled day of Fellowship and Celebration. From 11 to 4 there will be fun games. music from several worship bands, more food, pie eating contest, more games, and the anticipation of the Great Rib Throwdown. Each side (of competitors, not ribs), is convinced that their secret recipe is the ultimate, and it will be up to an impartial jury from Shoreline Church to make the historic decision. You do not want to miss this one!! Of course there can be no price tag for this much fun, so just be sure to be there and bring your appetite!! (Okay, if you bring your favorite salad that would be helpful).

House Meeting

Every Sunday night we have a House Meeting at The Bridge. This is for all residents to touch base and check in about issues that have been happening during the week. The topics vary from toilet paper or coffee getting stocked to more serious heart felt issues. Whether it's toilet paper or personal struggles it's great to see how people learn to grow and make appropriate compromises. It can be very challenging living under one roof with so many different personalities. We can be certain that God does have a sense of humor based on some of the house meeting topics! May God continue to grow and strengthen us within this house to glorify Him outside this house!

The Door

Doors have been a symbol used by the Lord even before He walked this earth. The first mention in the Scriptures of a door was when Cain's offering was not accepted of the LORD, and He came to Cain and asked why he was angry and his face had fallen? He was told that sin was 'crouching at the door. It's desire is for you, but you must rule over it.' The next verse finds Cain murdering his brother. The last verse that speaks of a door is in Revelation, where John describes it: 'After this I looked, and behold, a door standing open in heaven! And the first voice, which I had heard speaking to me like a trumpet, said, "Come up here, and I will show you what must take place after this."
Doors can have evil on one side and the Lord on the other, and yet we have been given the opportunity, the privilege, to walk through these doors. Angels wait with great anticipation to see what we as God's creation will do. These choices are given to us, not the angels. Consider how you might influence someone today about what door they might walk through...or not...

Highway 68 Cleanup

Why are all these people gathered together so early on a dark and drizzly morning, and why do they all look so happy? This cheerful group of Pagrovians came together for a Highway 68 cleanup project, which enhances the beauty of a scenic route into our little town. Headed by Moe Ammar (front row, bright yellow vest) who is the President of the Chamber of Commerce, our dedicated group of Bridge Residents (Jeff on the left in the white shirt, Louie, Scott, Adam, Joseph, and Sal flanking Moe) pitched in to pick up trash along the roadside. Afterwards we were treated to a fine breakfast, and we shared in the satisfaction of a job well done in service to our community. Thanks to all who participated!!

Last Nights Dinner

Last nights dinner was MARVELOUS! Scott's mom and dad came over and made salmon, artichokes and rice. That, along with all the sweets that showed up made for a fantastic dinner! Afterwards the guys had their Tuesday night Bible Study with Toner teaching out of the book of James. Really nice night! Thanks for Scott's parents for it being special.

Today is the day of the Redding Marathon that Mike is running in. HERE is the link for their website. It's a pleasure to know Mike and what he's doing with his life...strange to say that we're 'proud' of him...kinda like he's a son or something, but we ARE proud of him. The things that God has asked Mike to do are perfectly suited to the man he is. God will not ask us to do things that He does not equip us for. It's amazing to watch what God is doing in people's lives. What a blessing to know Mike.

People often ask what kind of people are here...... The people that need the services of The Bridge or other places like The Bridge are everyday people. We have men who all come from all walks of life. But, these men all belong to families. The men here are fathers, sons, husbands brothers, uncles and so on. Some of their families have given up hope and some families are still very hopeful. But, either way all of the men come from somewhere and are trying to get to a better place in their lives. Thank you to all who make a place like this possible for men to be restored. Your support makes a difference!

What's happening at The Bridge this week

ANOTHER MARATHON.!.!.!.!.! That's right, another one. Mike and Louie ran a marathon a couple months ago. They did such a great job! Now they have the marathon bug and they are running another one this Sunday in Redding. Plus they have recruited two more runners. This Sundays runners will be Mike, Louie, Scott & Adam. Go guys go!!!!!! Pray for them and stay tuned next Sunday to see how they all do.

There have been a couple of really great articles in the Monterey Herald about The Bridge. One is written by Staff Writer Emmanuel Romero titled 'House Of Hope' This ties into the recent interest that Artist Thomas Kinkade has in painting the 'House Of Hope'. Very exciting! Emmanuel does an excellent job at portraying what that 'Lemon-Yellow' house on the corner of Central and Second is all about. The link to the article can be found HERE, but we're in the process of getting an electronic copy that we'll link to later. Take a look, and read what a wonderful article the Herald had put out for all the Peninsula to read.
The other article has to do with one of the guys staying at the House of Hope by the name of Jeff Nixon. His article can be found HERE. Marc Cabrera did a fantastic job of telling about Jeff and the passion he has for looking at life through the lens, and the influence that Ansel Adams had on his life.
My hope is that these will be just the beginning of a series of articles written about the characters and character that The Bridge. As more and more people get to know what goes on in that old Victorian house, I pray they'll be more apt to get involved with the residents. But not just the guys at The Bridge, I pray that they'll be able to see those around us that aren't as fortunate as the likes of Jeff and the others....I pray that we can all reach out to the lost and hurting, broken and devastated in our community with what The Bridge offers....hope.

The Allure of Thomas Kinkade

Recently, there was an article about Thomas Kinkade in the Monterey County Weekly....quite a lengthy one, I might add. (Link to Article HERE). It delved into the approach that Thomas takes with portraying life in this world as he sees it. Some protest his views, and offer opinions about his style, but most find his work adoring and inspirational.
Thomas Kinkade has recently heard of the work that is being done in and through The Bridge, and he himself has been inspired by the changed lives and the effects that those lives have on friends, family, and the community at large. And so, Thomas has taken to portraying life at The Bridge, and the "House of Hope" that it affords to those being touched daily through it.
I'm one to remind people that there is nothing that goes on that our Heavenly Father is not completely aware of. Nothing happens in our lives that has not already passed by the desk of an Omnipotent God that He has already approved for our benefit. Our Father has richly blessed us with everything needed to proclaim His love for us. He cares about our safety and security, and wants us to shout it from the rooftops that others might know. Throughout the Old Testament, it was pretty apparent who God's people were, even through their trials. My prayer is that The Bridge continue to be a reflection of how Our Heavenly Father loves us enough not to leave us where He finds us, but to draw us closer to Him.

Sunday Afternoon Steak

Sunday afternoon, Mike and Elliott went to Chili's for a steak. Sounds normal...a couple of guys head out after church and head to the local fiesta-house for some grub. The whole reason for it?...Elliott went 30 days without smoking! Mike has told all the guys at The Bridge that if they quit smoking for 30 days, that he'll take them out for a steak at Chili's. Congratulations, Elliott! Hope it was the biggest they had!

There’s a new guy behind the wheel these days that’s enjoying the privilege of being a motorist. He’s not been with a valid California driver’s license for quite some time, but has just this past week completed the necessary steps to procure that cherished piece of ID that most take for granted. Jeff is just such a guy, and let me tell you, he’s ‘spinning broadies’ to have the liberty back! As part of the mission that The Bridge has, restoring hurting men back to their faith, family and community, this is one of the highlights that we need to applaud!
